The Inventory (and Items) | Almighty Devlog 2
Almighty Shield Devlog 2 – Gaining Power in Almighty Shield.
“Olá” and thank you for reading the second Devlog for Almighty Shield. This Devlog focuses on the structure of the Inventory. This Devlog also focuses on how I plan to give the player the items in order to make them stronger.
First things first.
Thanks for the amazing reception for the first Devlog! It’s the most viewed one I’ve ever had!
Early Development
Just coming off Polaroid and finally taking Almighty Shields development serious, I’ve had to learn how Data Structures Work. All I can remember now is how hard it was for me to comprehend how it worked. In addition, the first Iteration of the Inventory was this:
A Side Bar with six Inventory slots and as far as I remember as soon as you picked the item up, it added the stats to yours. Obviously not optimal but it worked for what it was and was the first proof of concept I had at the time. In addition, you can image how happy I was when I first got this to work.
However, it did not take long to change.
Early Development, Second Iteration.
During the same Reddit conversation, I told the person helping me that I have visually changed how the UI looks noting that I liked it more than the sidebar.
Anyways, in the same Reddit conversation I have reworked the Inventory to this:
Minecraft, Stardew Valley and more inspired me to make this Inventory. It looks more manageable and not to forget you need to actually equip the items in order to get the stats. It was at this time where I was confident with my ability on DS Lists. However, I still disliked some parts of this ui. I wanted to have a grid for the main inventory and not a simple line of inventory slots.
Active Development, Near Final Iteration
During this time, I was extremely dissatisfied with the inventory UI so I have decided to make a challenge to myself to rework it without getting help from third parties! I was able to do it after
I made it pretty was sophisticated for what my skillset used to be back then. When the player would be hovering over an item the right page would fill up with the stats of the item and if the item had a special effect there would be an (i) hovering above the stats over which you can hover with the mouse and get a quick description of what the special effect was. I was and still am proud of this UI; I am not sure, what inspired me to make this.
Current
This is pretty much the Current version of the Book UI. I have refined the Book UI sprite to be a much bigger sprite. It also has an opening animation! Just FYI, this UI are changed constantly and this, even though its only 3 months old, is already heavily outdated. Sadly, at the time of writing this, I am not on my main pc and cannot get a screenshot from the current Build.
OK, that is great and all but how do I finally get stronger in Almighty Shield?
Items! Items like shields, armor and accessories are obtained in various ways! One of the ways is slaying enemies; they have a chance to drop loot! There are also unique situations where the enemy contains a unique weapon and can drop them if you are lucky enough! Think of it like farming a specific rune etc. in Diablo 2 or a legendary weapon in Borderlands 2!
These Unique weapons focus on their special ability or a specific stat!
Thanks for reading this weeks devlog on Almighty Shield!
See ya next week ;)
